‘Annie’s song’
A classic country song, 'Annie's Song' was released as a
single from John Denver’s album Back Home Again. It went
on to become his second No.1 song in the United States,
after ‘Sunshine on my shoulder’, dominating that spot for
two weeks in July 1974. The song is about Denver's thenwife,
Annie Martell, a classic ballad from the bottom of his
heart. The melody is elementally simple, almost hymnlike.

From: Back Home Again (1974)
In the 1960s John Dever was selected from 300 applicants to
fill a vacancy in the Chad Mitchell Trio, with whom he toured
the United States until 1969 when he performed solo. After a
few mistakes, Denver reached the top of the charts with
Country Roads. Evoking images of the simplicity of nature and the complexity
of human emotions, John's songs also show concern for a wide
range of environmental and political issues. That success made
him a regular on the pop and country charts with songs like
Annie's Song, Rocky Mountain Highs, or Thank God I'm A
Country Boy.
